Weather Radar Simulators

Realistic and versatile weather radar simulation

BRS offers a full line of economical PC-based Weather Radar Simulation Systems (WRSS). The WRSS provides a flexible system, suitable for a wide variety of military and commercial aircraft simulation applications. Our Digital Radar Landmass Simulator (DRLMS) accurately simulates real-world terrain and cultural feature returns, weather patterns, windshear, and other effects. All systems can be customized for each application. Our systems support a variety of video interfaces for use with either actual or simulated aircraft displays.

Sophisticated underlying radar model

Unlike other low-end weather radar simulators, the BRS WRSS includes the same sophisticated radar models used in our high-performance Radar Simulation Systems. Thus the WRSS provides highly realistic simulation of weather, targets, landmass and cultural features. The WRSS can be configured with either generic or geo-specific terrain, up to and including a Worldwide Database. It includes sophisticated physics models for effects such as:

  • Attenuation due to weather, range and other effects
  • 4/3 Earth radius horizon
  • Radar characteristics (STC, AGC, noise, etc.)
  • Shadowing
  • Grazing angle attenuation
  • Pulse width effects
  • Antenna pattern effects
  • Far shore brightening

Navigation and weather avoidance features

The WRSS simulates all modes and functions of modern weather radars, including:

  • Windshear modeling and detection
  • Turbulence detection and reporting
  • Search modes
  • Skin paint detections
  • Beacons
  • IFF returns
  • Navigation waypoints
  • Delay/expand modes
Embedded design available

The WRSS is now available as an embedded system self-contained within a simulated radar indicator. By using small form-factor PC/104 CPU boards, and working closely with a custom display manufacturer, we are able to embed the entire WRSS within the indicator, including I/O handling for bezel controls. This greatly simplifies installation and maintenance, as it minimizes impact to the flight simulator architecture. An Ethernet connection on the indicator is the only interface required.
